Good Students, Goodfellows, Great Results

Christmas Projects

This year’s St. Clair involvement with the local Goodfellows’ newspaper sale saw the college raise the most cash in its history for the Christmas food-parcel charity.

Student-members of the Protection, Security and Investigation/Police Foundations (PSI/PF) Society – accepting donations for the newspapers throughout the school and at traffic intersections near the school – collected $7,500 during the two-day blitz on November 22 and 23.

That eclipsed the $5,700 raised during the Society’s first year of Goodfellows involvement in 2016.

Professor Pat Leblanc noted, “While at the Windsor Family Credit Union on Malden Road in Lasalle (on the final day of the sale), two staff had to verify the money. We were at $7,475. I said to them I would add five dollars to make it $7,480 … The two (credit union) staff members pitched in ten dollars each because they were impressed by our community work.”

After wrapping up the record-setting Goodfellows’ project, over 20 PSI/PF students carried out three “Random Acts of Kindness” on the afternoon of the 23rd, in the form of yard clean-ups for a trio of senior home-owners.

The Society is also in the midst of its annual fundraiser to provide Christmas assistance to families served by the local Children’s Aid Society.

… AND …

• Recently, Mechanical Technician–CAD/CAM Professor Ivan Canjar issued an emailed appeal to the college, in an attempt to help a friend who is collecting clothing and household goods for a family of two parents and eight children who lost everything in a fire.

Among those who “stepped up” was the third-year Business Administration-Marketing program. Professor Nicole Rourke informed Canjar that “the students and I are 'adopting' this family. Each student has picked a name and they are planning to shop this week and buy something for their person … I hope this will help make their Christmas a little merrier. Thank you for bringing this to our attention as we are happy to help this family, and I'm trying to teach our students to be good corporate and community citizens, and told them this is a good start.”

• Also, this week, the college’s Esthetician program will stage its annual Christmas Salon days, with a variety of services available, at low cost, during the afternoons of Tuesday the 27th to Thursday the 29th (see accompanying graphic).

Proceeds from this event will go towards presents for the Student Representative Council-organized Food and Toy Drive for needy students and their families.
