Minister "Graduates" From Education To Postsecondary Portfolio

As part of a Cabinet shuffle reflecting the impending, pre-June-election retirements of many Liberal veterans, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has named a new Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development.

Mitzie Hunter, the MPP for the Toronto-area riding of Scarborough-Guildwood and (most recently) the Minister of Education, will step into the new role.

She assumes leadership of the MAESD from Deb Matthews, who retains the Deputy-Premier’s position until her retirement prior to the provincial election in early-June.

Her official biography notes that Hunter “was first elected to the Ontario legislature in 2013. She was re-elected in 2014. (Prior to holding the Education portfolio ...) She was previously the Associate Minister of Finance, responsible for the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan.”

Pre-politics, “She has worked as CEO of the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance. She championed unlocking the GTA’s potential by ensuring fair and inclusive access to employment and prosperity.

“Hunter and her family immigrated to Canada from Jamaica in 1975, and she grew up in Scarborough. Hunter graduated with a B.A. from the University of Toronto and completed an M.B.A. from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.
