Saints Busy Throughout The Community

community involvement

It’s a wonder that St. Clair’s staff and students actually have time left in their lives for education.

That would seem to be a fair observation after the college’s Board of Governors reviewed two reports tabled at the February 27th meeting, both dealing with the topic of “community involvement” on the part of individual staff members and students, and campus-based groups, organizations and classes.

These two reports are presented annually to the Board, with the activities of St. Clairians compiled by Vice-President of College Communications and Community Relations John Fairley. They are, traditionally, the lengthiest reports presented to the Board every year, demonstrating that the college and its people are so extremely involved in the activities and causes of Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent.

The pair of reports, this year, took up 17, text-packed pages of the Board’s agenda, depicting the involvement of college personnel and students in hundreds of local activities: minor league sports, charities of all sorts, amateur theatre, service clubs, hobby and leisure organizations, multicultural groups, physical and mental health-care agencies, etc., etc.. (Pictured, above, is a page from the report, depicting some of those activities and contributions.)

Staff and students devote hours of their extra-curricular time to act in a volunteer capacity as coaches, mentors, fundraisers, board members, advocates, and organizers.

Every organization at the college – the Student Representative Council, Thames Students Incorporated, the Saint Student Athletic Association, the Alumni Association, the St. Clair Foundation, the administration, employee unions, the Retirees Association, and many campus programs, classes and clubs – also annually donate to, sponsor the events of, or fundraise in conjunction with dozens of local charities.

Fairley customarily notes, too, that the lengthy report probably indicates only a fraction of the wide-ranging involvement of students and staff in the life of the community, because the listings he provides represent only the information that has been provided to him by St. Clairians who respond to his request for information about their activities. A great many staff and students probably carry out their volunteer activities silently and selflessly without ever seeking recognition in the annual reports.
